Shabbat and Festivals: Challah

Challah

Challah is a special loaf of bread eaten as part of the welcoming of Shabbat and festivals. We have two loaves of bread on the Shabbat table to remember the biblical story of the Jews in the wilderness after the Exodus, who received a miraculous supply of manna every day, but on Friday received double the amount so it would last throughout Shabbat, the day of rest. The loaves are often plaited or circular. We say a short prayer of thanksgiving before eating challah
