People from throughout Scotland, including Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Comrie, and Glasgow, converged on the Den at Kirriemuir for a family Shavuot picnic organised by the Jewish Council of Scotland. The Den provided a great setting, and its natural beauty and a relaxed atmosphere was ideal for the festive celebration.
Families brought food to share that celebrated traditional Shavuot dishes as well as the diverse culinary talents of the participants, and, from Shavuot’s customary dairy-based treats to more varied fare, the shared meal became a symbol of unity, hospitality, and festivity.
The event provided an opportunity to meet other Jewish people, and the connections that quickly sprang up were a powerful reminder of the strong ties that bind Jewish people together, even when they live far from one another, and in many cases outwith any settled Jewish community.
Sydney Switzer, the JCoS Senior Community Worker, who organised the event commented, “It was so lovely for Jewish people living in small communities across the North-East to come together and share. Events like these are vital in building community spirit and ensuring that people in more remote areas still feel connected to the wider Jewish world.”
For many of those attending, the Shavuot celebration in Kirriemuir was more than just a picnic; it was a meaningful opportunity to connect with others who share their faith and culture, to enjoy a sense of belonging, and to mark an important festival in the Jewish calendar together with their community. |
