I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Jewish community both here in Scotland and worldwide a joyous Rosh Hashanah.
Rosh Hashanah, is a meaningful time of reflection, unity and celebration for the many Jewish communities across Scotland. It offers a moment to look back on the past year with gratitude, introspection and to seek forgiveness, but it is also a time for great celebration, sharing meals with loved ones, and not forgetting a slice or two of delicious honey cake.
While this is a season of celebration, I am also mindful that not all Jewish people will reap the benefits that this time of year brings to so many. I understand communities are feeling concerned about levels of antisemitism, and though the levels of antisemitic hate crime in Scotland have historically been lower than in other parts of the UK, we cannot afford to be complacent. We must remain alert to the harmful forces that seek to cause division. The Scottish Government stands firmly against antisemitism, and against all forms of hatred and prejudice, and is committed to confronting them wherever they appear.
Here in Scotland, the Jewish community plays a vital role in enriching our shared cultural and spiritual life. Your valuable contributions to civic society, education, and interfaith dialogue continue to inspire and strengthen the bonds between us all. As we strive to build greater community cohesion, we recognise the importance of standing together in solidarity, especially during moments of spiritual significance.
Over the coming year, I, along with Ministers and government officials, will continue our meaningful engagement with Jewish communities across Scotland. I sincerely hope the year ahead brings joy and happiness to all, both here at home and abroad.
Once again please accept my best wishes for health, happiness, and peace to all Jewish Communities.
