The Jewish Community in Scotland
sends condolences

following the death of Pope Francis

23 April 2025

JCoS Co-Chairs Nicola Livingston and Timothy Lovat have sent a letter of condolence to the Bishops' Conference of Scotland following the death of Pope Francis:

"On behalf of the Jewish community, we would like to extend our sincere condolences. It was with sadness that we learnt of the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis this Easter Weekend. We recognise the importance of his leadership to Catholics around the world and the deep sense of loss felt by so many. His commitment to dialogue and respect between faiths was deeply appreciated and we hope his legacy continues to inspire mutual understanding.

He was a sincere friend to the Jewish people, from his days as Bishop and then Archbishop of Buenos Aires and was greatly respected for his work to promote good relations in the spirit of Nostra Aetate, not least by his visit to the Rome synagogue in 2016. His dedication to strengthening the relationship between our communities and his outspoken condemnation of antisemitism will be remembered with respect and gratitude.

Please know that our thoughts are with you and your community during this time of mourning. May his memory be a for blessing."

Rabbi Moshe Rubin of Giffnock Newton Mearns Synagogue represented the Jewish Community during the Scottish Parliament Motion of Condolence following the death of Pope Francis, and Nicola Livingston signed the Book of Condolence that has been opened by the Lord Provost of Glasgow at Glasgow City Chambers.
