Shine a Light on Chanukah in Dumfries

13 December 2016
SCoJeC Chanukah event in Dumfries

SCoJeC’s outreach events are starting to follow a pattern: we advertise, we’re surprised and delighted by how many people say they plan to come – and then three times as many actually attend!

Our pre-Chanukah event at Rugman's Hall in Dumfries was no exception. We were pleased when 16 people told us they were coming, and delighted with the huge turnout of around 50 people, some from as near as the opposite side of the river but others an hour and a half’s journey away.

Fiona Frank, SCoJeC’s Projects and Outreach Manager, opened the event by welcoming everyone. Mark Robertson, who has recently moved to the area, told the Chanukah story to a captivated audience, and Donald Shamash – with the most appropriate name! – lit the chanukiah, after which everyone took part in a printmaking workshop led by Israeli community artists Tom and Roi, before tucking in to the food, which of course included the traditional oily Chanukah delicacies of latkes and doughnuts.

Many thanks to the St Bride's Anglican Church Dumfries for the use of Rugmans Hall, to the Loch Arthur Camphill community who assisted SCoJeC staff as well as taking part in all the activities, and to the Netherlee and Clarkston Charitable Trust for their support for this entire programme of events.
